Ruth V. McWilliams daughter of the late William H. and Bertha Taylor Pierce, departed this life on October 12, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington, Delaware.
Ruth was born April 18, 1941 in Wilmington, Delaware and received her education at Absalom Jones and Conrad High School. She worked as a nurse at Wilmington General in the early 1970’s, as a short-order cook at Marconi’s Italian restaurant from the mid 1970’s to the mid 1980’s; and as a food preparer at ICI / Astra Zeneca from the mid 1980‘s until her retirement in 2004. Ruth’s favorite hobbies were watching old TV mysteries, playing pitty-pat card games, hand-held poker, playing the lottery and gambling at the casinos. Ruth enjoyed cooking and was especially exceptional at making her homemade mac and cheese, biscuits and sweet potato pies. She also enjoyed listening to gospel and old doo-wop music, and dancing (especially the Bop). Most importantly, Ruth loved talking to her children, grand/great grand kids, and her siblings on a daily basis.
She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter Marilyn Wanamaker, son Lennie McWilliams (Crystal), ex-husband Leonard; 5 grandchildren Calen (Shamika), Casee (Kendall), Jennifer, Madison, and L.J.; 6 great grandchildren Angel, C.J., Hayden, Zoe, Xavier, and Corey; Siblings: James Neal, Elease Moss, Audrey (James) Dillard, Delores Pierce, William D. Pierce, Arletta Wiggins, Betty (Russell) Lee, Rudolph Pierce, Norman (Gwendolyn) Pierce; In-laws: Wendell McWilliams, Vernell Solomon, Napoleon (Bertha) McWilliams, Marie (Claude) Richardson and Leon McWilliams; 18 nieces and nephews: Yvonne, Anthony, Clifford, Steve, Allen, Walter, Gregory, Richard, Bryan, Troy, Russell, Chadwick, William D. Jr., Marlon, Stevie, Tamika, Derrwick and Norman, Jr.; companion of many years, Godfrey Henry and many cousins and other loving family members and friends.
Her brothers Rayfield Taylor, Bernard Pierce and Alvin Pierce, and sister-in-law Sandra Pierce and three brothers-in-law, James Moss, Tony Pierce and Walter Wiggins preceded her in death.
A service honoring her life will be held on Thursday October 28, 2021 at 11 am, viewing 9-11am at Mother UAME Church, 701 E 5 th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801. Interment will be held at Gracelawn Memorial Park Cemetery. All attendees must wear masks.
