Our Matriarch Mary K. Walker

Mary K. Walker who was affectionately known as “Kaby” peacefully went to eternal rest on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 exactly 2 weeks after her 96 birthday at the Hillside Nursing Home.

Kaby was born April 5, 1927 in Wilmington, Delaware to Thomas H. Harris, Jr. and Martina Harris. Kaby was educated through the Wilmington Public School System. She graduated from Howard High School Class of 1944.Kaby attended college and graduated with a degree in Business. After graduation she became employed as a Private Secretary for the Dupont Co.in Wilmington.

Kaby grew up attending Mother AUFCMP Church when it was on 8 ^th and French Street and also when it relocated to 9 ^th and Franklin Street in Wilmington. The last church she attended was Elizabeth AME Church in Belvedere, DE under Pastor Maurice Butler.

After retiring Kaby loved traveling. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, doing crossword puzzles, bingo and socializing with her friends, BFF’s Barbara Matthews and Doris Robinson. Most of all she loved and enjoyed her family, cutting up with the nieces and nephews and her loving brother Eggie.

Kaby was very spiritual, kind, caring, loving, sweet, and feisty. Anyone who knew her, knows this is true. Kaby enjoyed her life until she became ill in 2017.

Kaby was predeceased in death by her parents Thomas and Martina Harris, Sr.; her 3 siblings, Thelma and Alton DeShields and Thomas Harris, lll. (Eggie). and Melvin Stanford who was a significant part of her life.  Kaby leaves a host of nieces and nephews and I mean a host of nieces and nephews who she loved very much and her other children Melba, Edward and Dorothea A devoted niece Leslie Wright who cared for her during her illness, 2 godchildren J. Llewellyn Bell and Doris Robinson. Special thanks to Hillside Nursing Home,  second floor staff and especially Zeta Brown and Esther Davies.

Celebration of her life will be held on Friday April 28, 2023 at Mother UAME Church 701 E. 5th St. Wilm, DE 19801. Service, 11 am, viewing 9-10:45 am.
