Marian Hawkins, the fourth child of Matthew and Lula Davis was born in Wilmington, Delaware on April 29, 1935. On May 6, 2022, the Good Lord sent his angels to relieve her of all pain and suffering. He presented to her a crown and wings and received her unto himself. Even though we wanted her to stay, the Lord said your journey is over, you’ve completed your task and finished your race. Come home my good and faithful servant.
Marian received her early education in Miami, Florida and then to Wilmington, Delaware. At twelve years of age Marian and her parents along with her siblings, Beulah, and twins Lurlene and Geraldine also known Aunt Teeny and Aunt Gerald moved to Millside in New Castle. Marian attended Howard High School following soon after obtaining her nursing degree at Delaware Technical College. With nursing degree in hand, she began her career at Wilmington General and Christiana Hospital until 1989 when her health begun to fail her. If you knew Marian Hawkins, you knew even in failing health she would not be stopped in taking care of and aiding those in need.
In 1952 Marian married John Winfield Hawkins aka “Joe Buck” from whence Rick Ceaso Roderick “Bilal/Hawk” Hawkins was born. Son Clarence “Salah” Turner. Marian later birthed her only daughter Merna Vernal Hawkins.
Marian was known for being no nonsense, straight to the point, taking care of hers and other businesses, accepting and raising people in her home. Those traits were definitely passed down to both her son Bilal and her daughter Merna.
In 1976 Marian joined Carter Temple under the leadership of the late Bishop Nathaniel Carter and stayed there as a faithful member until her transition. She loved the Lord, her church and her church family. They in return loved Mother Hawkins. Mother Hawkins held many positions in the church like the head of the kitchen and cleaning committee, reading church announcements, singing on the senior choir, and teaching Sunday school. Not only did Mother Hawkins know the Lord, but she also loved the Lord.
Marian Hawkins had many titles and names. Whether it was Mother, Aunt Marian, Cuppy, Mom, Mom-Mom, grand-mom and as stated before Mother Hawkins. The word that best describes her is LOVE.
This beautiful soul would offer you a meal, positive words and great advice. No matter how bad things would seem, after speaking to her you knew this too would pass. No matter the time or day the light was always on.
You could always catch Marian doing puzzles, reading, doing taxes for family and friends, spending time with family or in her recliner watching In the Heat of the Night, Touched by an Angel or old cowboy movies. In addition, Mom would watch her old VHS tape of Shirley Ceasar’s I Remember Momma almost every day and her grands.
