Charlie James Grimes, Sr. aka (Desert Dog) was born on April 22, 1947 in Greenville, NC to the late Thomas and Malissa Grimes. Charlie departed this life on March 25, 2022 at home with his loving wife by his side.
Charlie attended Greenville, NC public schools and later joined the Marines. He served two tours in Vietnam as a Field Radio Operator. He was decorated with a National Defense Service Medal, a Marksman Rifle Badge, and a Good Conduct Medal. Charlie was honorably discharged and moved to Delaware in the mid 1970's.
Charlie worked for a number of jobs, just to name a few, he worked for the DuPont Company, Bank of America, Brandywine Condominiums, as a property manager, the State of Delaware as a court clerk and worked his way up to a State Constable for Court 11. He worked as a Constable until his retirement in 2015. After retiring Charlie took a part time job at NDX Dodd's Dental Laboratory, Inc. in New Castle, Delaware.
In the year 2000 Charlie met Carolyn L. Bullock and they married in 2007.
Charlie and Carolyn were members of the Hillcrest-Bellefonte UMC in Wilmington, Delaware. Charlie was a member of the choir, and also served as head of the Trustee Board.
Charlie was a people person who made friends wherever he went. He got great enjoyment from helping people who were in distress. He spent hie free time with his Free Rollers Family at their weekly luncheons. Charlie enjoyed taking long and short motor cycle trips with the Free Rollers. When he was not riding he enjoyed going to the shooting range. Charlie was an expert marksman. He also enjoyed fishing. traveling and camping. As a matter of fact his first date with his wife Carolyn was a camping trip. Some would say it was a cheap date, but it was the best date they ever had!
Charlie was involved with a number of organizations; Free Rollers MC, American Legion, Monday Club, Bowling League, Diamond State Van Club and the Free Mason's.
Charlie was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Verta Mae Grimes-Taylor, brother David Grimes, 14 step siblings and one grandson.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Carolyn Bullock Grimes, sister, Edna Moore, his son, Charlie, Jr. and two daughters, Pamela Johnson and Tracey Grimes, 6 grandchildren, Michael and CJ Grimes, Jonathan, Danielle and Dominique Johnson, Madison Mayo and his favorite nephews, Wayne Taylor(Katherine) and Keynan Collins, and a host of cousins, great nephews and great nieces.
Home going service will be held on Monday April 11, 2022 . Viewing 10-11:40, 11:40 Masonic ceremony. Service at 12 noon. Masks are required
