Carrie Lee Bowden, affectionately called "Tiny or Teen Teen", was born on March 12, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Tom Butler and Pricilla Hurtt. She was raised in Wilmington, Delaware along with her younger siblings Gilbert Hurtt and Grace Jefferson. Both of whom predeceased her in life.
Young Carrie attended the Wilmington public schools. She graduated from Howard High School in 1956 along with her life long best friend Mary Hopkins-Tyson of Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1956 Carrie gave birth to her first child, a daughter she named Miriam T. Green, currently of Los Angeles. In 1962 she met and married the late Robert S. Pritchett, Sr. From that union she bore two sons, Robert S. Pritchett, Jr. of Quincy, Massachusetts and Edward E. Pritchett, Jr of Wilmington, Delaware. Carried married the late John Z. Bowden of Hackensack, New Jersey in 1970.Delaware. She gave birth to her last child, Samuel L. Bowden, currently of Newark, Delaware.
A lifelong member of the Church of God and Saints of Christ, Temple Beth El, Carrie was baptized at a very young age. In the Wilmington tabernacle, she joyously served in various offices around the Daughters of Jerusalem Quorum. She formed a fund raising collaborative group called the "Golden Girls" that sponsored various bus trips to Baltimore's Harbor Crab Fests, Atlantic City casinos and Riverfront flea markets. She enjoyed attending the annual Passover celebrations in Belleville, Virginia under the guidance, teachings and love from the current leadership Rabbi McNeil and the Los Angeles tabernacle's support, she faithfully practiced the religious tenements of Judaism until she was called to rest.
Carrie retired from 30 years of employment in 2001. She ended a career as a medical attendant at Delaware State Hospital. She then began to travel the highlight of which was her son's wedding trip to Indonesia.
In December of 2014, Carrie moved to Sylmar, California to live with her daughter and begin life anew. She did so by enjoying activities and making friends at the Alicia Brodus Senior Center and fellowship with the Los Angeles Temple Beth El Tabernacle and Agape International Spiritual Center. She would be often overheard on the front porch teasing east coast cousins Arnold, Lucretta, Josephine about the beautiful Cali weather, or story-telling with friends, Renee, Gail, Ida, Sherry and Pauline about today's events.
When called upon, Carrie would often pull out a little book of prose and cheerfully recite a meaningful thought or poem for the occasion. When asked "asked she was doing" she would chuckle out "fair and middlin" and when asked to sing something, she sweetly render " I've been running a long time, ain't got tired yet." In the wee hours of Sunday, July 12, 2020, Carrie got tired.
Carrie proudly leaves behind unconditional love in her four children, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
