Wilbert John Bentley, affectionately known as "Will", of Wilmington Delaware was born on May 11, 1938 and went home to be with the Lord on January 14, 2018 in the presence of his loving caregivers Pamela and Brinton S Davis, Sr.
He was the son of the deceased Helen and (stepfather) Alfred Helm. Wilbert was the eldest of eight children and is survived by: (brother) Roland Helm and wife Brenda; (sisters) Mattie Helm and (sister) Diane Pierce. The remaining siblings, Phyllis; James; Clarence; Evon and his beloved grandmother, Carrie Bentley, who raised him, preceded him in death.
Wilbert was educated in the Wilmington school system and enlisted in the United States Navy in August of 1955, where he received his GED and was honorably discharged in September of 1958.
After his discharge, Wilbert met and married Ruth Ann who also preceded him in death.
During his lifetime, Will worked at many different jobs in the field of general maintenance and landscaping. He enjoyed listening to all types of music and especially liked playing bongos and drums to the beats of different songs. As a young man, Will enjoyed lifting weights and playing cards.
Upon moving in with his caregivers, Will could be found watching Christian television on Sunday mornings or attending St Paul U.A.M.E church from time to time.
Wilbert was a bit of a loner, but in his waning years, he enjoyed the company of his service brothers; Ronald Bastone of the Airforce and Samuel Hicklin of the Army. They truly are brothers in arms.
He leaves to cherish his memory; his remaining siblings, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Service will be held Thursday February 1, 2018 at 11 am, Mother UAME Church 701 E. 5th St. Wilm., DE 19801. Viewing 10-11am. Interment, Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
