William Pettaway was born on December 02, 1926 to Abraham and Mary Pettaway. He was one of fifteen siblings, who were educated in the Philadelphia School System. Upon graduation Billy, as he was fondly known, entered the Army.
He met and married Jacqueline Moore, and they played a vital role in the upbringing of their niece Noreen and nephew’s Charles and Curtis Pettaway. As a Christian he affiliated himself with the Galilee Baptist Church located in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. During his early adult life he was a member of the Adult Choir. At least one Saturday evening a month some of the choir members would meet at his Dupont Street address for fun and fellowship. Albeit, before they left to go to their respective homes they would gather around the piano to sing a parting hymn.
More Importantly, Billy was a dedicated and devoted family man, neighbor and friend. He enjoyed the holidays because this meant spending time with those he loved. Like his brothers, he was an avid cook.
As a member of the Straughter – Carter Post i.e. veterans this kept him busy working and socializing with men and women of a kindred spirit.
Container Corporation of America is where Billy was employed until retirement. And even then he did not sit still. He continued to work at the Roxborough Memorial Hospital as a Security Guard. He took this position very seriously getting to know all who daily walked through the hospital doors.
At the age of sixty-five Billy fell in love with Maria Weldon and they married in 1992. He became the patriarch of her six children and grandchildren. They were an adoring couple until she boarded the Glory Bound Train on February 29, 2012.
He leaves to cherish his memory, Corey and his wife Adrienne who took care of him until the end, five children, Brenda Lacey, Bernard Weldon, Timothy Weldon, Arlene Gay, Vincent Weldon, and their respective spouses. One brother Charles H. Pettaway Sr. two sister in laws, Beatrice Tomlin & Doris Williams, nineteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren who fondly referred to him as Pop. Also, there are a host of nieces, nephews and friends who will miss his presence.
