Maxine Lawson (Armstrong) Holley Obituary
Maxine Lawson (Armstrong) Holley peacefully passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011. She was a well-loved matriarch, educator, and daughter of Macknolia D. Davis and Irma Davis Lawson. She was born on August 4, in Little Rock, Arkansas, and spent her infant and early years in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mrs. Holley graduated from Saint Francis de Sales School in Rock Castle, Virginia, founded by Saint Mother Catherine Drexel, and Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was married to John W. Armstrong Jr. (deceased) and Eugene Holley Sr. After a brief stint teaching school in North Carolina, Mrs. Holley worked in a number of capacities for the federal government, most notably, as a Revenue Officer and Manager for the Internal Revenue Service, and was awarded the Albert Gallatin Award for distinguished service by Department of the Treasury upon her retirement. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wilmington, Delaware and participated in many church activities. She is preceded in death by her father, Macknolia D. Davis, mother, Irma Harraway Davis Lawson and step-father Horace Lawson. She is survived in loving memory by her sons, John W. Armstrong III [Theodosia], Stephen L. Armstrong [Peggy], and Eugene Holley Jr.; her grandchildren John (Jay) W. Armstrong IV [Kristen], Dianna K. Armstrong, Allison K. Armstrong, and Stacia K. Johnson [Coby]; and her great-grandchildren Brian A. Armstrong, Kendal R. Armstrong, Sydni M. Armstrong, Stephen C. Johnson, Shane C. Johnson, and Dante L. Armstrong. Visitation without public viewing will be held on June 1, 2011, from 9 am until 10:30 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1012 N. French Street, Wilmington, Delaware. Funeral services will begin at 11 am. Interment at Cathedral Cemetery.
